Why is My Car Leaking Water?

If your car is leaking water, it’s no cause for alarm. Some water leaks are harmless, while others may indicate a leaking auto fluid reservoir or other underlying issue. Read the guide below to learn how to tell when a car leaking water is normal, and when to visit a College Place-area service center so a certified Honda mechanic can take a closer look.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

First, find out whether it’s automotive liquid or water leaking from under a car. The liquid may look like water, but it’s not always possible to see the color of the liquid when it’s on the ground. Use these tips to find out if your car is leaking water:

  • Place a sheet of paper under the leak. If the liquid that drips onto it is yellow, green, or blue, your car is leaking coolant. To confirm a coolant leak, check your vehicle’s coolant level. If it’s low, check out our Honda Parts eStore to order a replacement reservoir, or visit us near Walla Walla.
  • Some leaking water is normal. Condensation in your vehicle’s air conditioning and engine systems may be the cause of water leaking from under a car. Normal exhaust condensation can also cause water to drip from the tailpipe.
  • Lots of water and white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe? Your car may have a blown gasket, which can cause coolant to burn along with your fuel. If this is the case, get your car checked out by a professional ASAP.
  • Leak near the front tires? Your car could be leaking windshield wiper fluid. Use a sheet of paper to check for a blue color. Cold weather can cause windshield wiper fluid to freeze and crack the fluid reservoir as it expands.

If you find a leak and cannot determine the cause, take your car in for a professional inspection. That way you can rest assured that any underlying issues are taken care of.

What Fluid is Leaking From My Car?

If fluid is leaking from your car, it’s most likely water or coolant. However, it could be a number of other automotive fluids. Check the color of the leak to find out:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
